GVFD is a busy Volunteer Department today. We run over a 100 calls each month and we take great pride in our response times to the community. Being volunteer we are dependent on the community for membership and are open to new members at all times. Being a volunteer at GVFD does require a time commitment from our members of a minimum of about three to five hours a week.
When joining GVFD we issue the new members a station uniform, firefighting gear, pager and any other equipment. The process for joining GVFD starts with making contact with us. The application will be reviewed by our membership and have a background check completed. Our membership committee will make contact and set up an interview. From this point the prospective member will be invited to a regularly scheduled business meeting which is the first Thursday of each month at Station 2, 500 Whisper View Court, and the final interview with the membership where they will vote on the application. One helpful tip to remember for the interview, when asked “what is your favorite color of firetruck?” It is highly recommended that if applying at GVFD that you respond with “White with red stripes.”
Become a Firefighter
Hood County Fire Academy graduates firefighters on a regular basis. These men and women attended Saturday training for several months including topics on fire behavior, incident command, PPE, SCBA, forceable entry, wildland firefighting, structure firefighting, and many other topics. This training certifies each student as a Firefighter 1 and 2 for the Texas State Fireman and Fire Marshals Association (SFFMA)
